Prostate Treatments for Various Disorders

Prostate treatments for common disorders in the prostate gland are varied and numerous. Disorders in the prostate gland are easier to control and treat than other diseases, thanks mainly to the scientific community's numerous researches regarding the subject. Several options are available to men who suffer from these disorders, ranging from monitoring tactics to surgical techniques to radiation and even chemotherapy. Prostate treatments can be for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), prostatitis or cancer.

The symptoms of these prostate gland disorders are similar in almost all counts; the most common being, frequent urination, pain or burning during urination and blood in the urine or semen. Despite the similarities in some of their symptoms, these three conditions each has its own sets of treatment options and choosing the appropriate one necessitates the examination of various factors and elements related to the patient. Enlarged prostate or BPH occurs when the cells in the inner core of the prostate grow and form fibrous nodules in response to decreasing levels of testosterone which usually happens as a man ages. Enlarged prostate can be treated using either alpha blockers or finasteride. Alpha blockers such as terazosin, prazosin and doxazosin, relax the muscles and relieve symptoms.

Finasteride or dutasteride, on the other hand, can cause the prostate gland to shrink which could result in better urinary functions. In advanced cases of BPH, surgical procedures such as transurethral resection of the prostate, transurethral incision and transurethral microwave thermotherapy may be employed. Prostatitis, another type of prostate gland disorder, is an inflammation usually caused by infection. Treatment options for this condition include Quercetin, a bioflavonoid that decreases inflammation and oxidant stress; antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin; and alpha blockers such as tamsulosin and alfuzosin. The immunomodulator called suplatast tosilate and bee pollen or Cernilton have also been found to be effective against prostatitis. Cancer of the prostate, although considered a worse scenario than prostatitis and BPH, is a manageable condition compared with other types of cancer.

Several treatment options are available to men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and these include watchful waiting, surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, cryosurgery and hormone therapy. Selecting the treatment for prostate cancer depends on a host of factors including the age and health of the patient, stage and grade of the cancer, other illnesses that the patient might have and possible side effects. Prostate treatments have become more varied and numerous throughout the years.

Men who suffer from any prostate disorder need not be anxious, all they need to do is discuss their treatment options with their doctors and more likely than not, they will find a therapy that will be appropriate for them.
